It's a very well reseached work and while the prose drags a bit in pages, I'd recommend it to anyone who's ever taken a 20th Century American Lit classAt one point she describes the privileged of Hemingways circle on their excursions sashaying through Europe but you dont get many more tsk tsks than thatHemingway was mentored and advised on how to develop his writing skills, his friends greatly supported his writing in every way possibleI think Hemingway is a big old jerkface - and this book largely proves thatAs one critic at the time said, The Sun Also Rises was journalism with just enough fictionto permit Hemingway to get away with calling the book a novelHorribly narcissistic and terrible to the women and most of the "friends" in his life, but he contributed a good amount of work to American literary classics and for that I applaud himHis writing changed France and Spain into hot, romantic tourist meccas particularly for Americans and swelled the number of ex-pats.There is a straight line through the book showing Hemingway's shrewd, narcissistic, emotionally reactive personalityThis bo I requested this book because so often Hemingway is glorified and proclaimed to be such a transformative figure in modern literatureEvery so often you get her honest opinionJun 25, 2016 Ann rated it liked it Blume's book is a very well-researched 'history' of how Hemingway wrote 'The Sun Also Rises": He essentially took a non-fiction account of going to bullfights and fiestas with the friends he had at the time and changed everyone's names - without bothering to change easily identifiable characteristicsMar 08, 2017 Richard Levine rated it really liked it Shelves: 2017 This is a really fun and informative book, even though it's "just" a book about the writing of a book (the novel The Sun Also Rises)It is not a pretty sight, the urge to do this irresistibleMAs soon as Fitzgerald saw Hemingways writing he called it the real thingJun 18, 2016 Anne rated it it was ok Shelves: biography, non-fiction Well, I have been slogging through this book for over a week now, and, honestly, I am almost finished with it, but I am calling it quitsPeople like Sherwood Anderson and Harold Loeb who had only been kind and opened doors for him found themselves parodied and cruelly criticized. This is an entertaining, extremely well researched book and a big window into the 1920's literary worldShe recently published her first travel book "The Beginners Guide to the French Riviera: Stop Dreaming & Start Packing" and is currently working on a second guide to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington StateShe supported him with uncomplaining loyalty through all the years when he was struggling and poor and was cast off the instant he achieved his dreamsMost were not happy and the publishing of this novel ended many a friendshipI have long loved Hemingways workJun 03, 2017 Joseph Bentz rated it it was amazing This was a fascinating book about the real-life events and people that Ernest Hemingway fictionalized in his novel, "The Sun Also Rises." I especially like a section at the end in which the author provided overviews of what happened to some of these people in the years after the book came outWhen Hemingway is seen whining about how no one is giving him the recognition he feels he deserves (in all of about only five years of trying), you can feel Blumes nerves grate, a person who spent many more years than that tucked away in the archives with no promise of a fraction of the attention Hemingway ended up receivingAnd it looks like shes now onto Fitzgerald which is great newsBut if you're not, author Blume does a fantastic job of sorting through and clearly summarizing these many different versions of the events, and turning it into a fascinating, fun, and gossipy narrativeHaving read it for 20th Century American Literature in my first year in college, I wanted to get the story behind the storyBlume is better than that thoughM 48a4f088c3

MThe best line in this breathy, gossipy, here-we go-again-with-the-Lost-Generation exposé of the antics of the real people on whom Ernest ...
